Edeniq, Inc. developed a low-cost, low carbon intensity technology for the conversion of cellulosic biomass (plant material) to ethanol. The project design is based on innovative processes integrating mechanical pretreatment, advanced enzymes, and improved yeasts. It combines novel processing of raw materials, saccharification (conversion of biomass to intermediate cellulosic sugars), and fermentation to produce cellulosic ethanol.

The facility is a two ton per day biorefinery which uses corn stover as feedstock—meaning the residual corn leaves, husks, and stalks left after harvest are used as the raw materials from which the fuel is derived. The project is an extension of a $25 million U.S. Department of Energy program to demonstrate this transformational technology on California-relevant feedstocks. Edeniq can produce 70 gallons of cellulosic advanced ethanol per ton of biomass. Each gallon of cellulosic ethanol can displace approximately 0.65 gallons of petroleum and will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 70 to 90 percent compared to the displaced petroleum.
